Vice-Governor’s Welcome Message: Regional Schools Press Conference 2015
My respect to our beloved Provincial Governor – Hon. Herminia M. Ramiro; to our Board Members; to DepEd Schools Division Superintendent – Sir Agustines Cepe; to the principals, teacher coaches, and competent campus journalists from the different schools all throughout Region 10; all other guests, maayong hapon.
It is such an honor to be here this afternoon and see firsthand the excited faces of our young and new breed of promising journalists. Can I request all campus journalists to rise up? Can we give them a hand? Daghang salamat.
When we look at you, we see future and potential partners to nation-building. Salamat sa atong national government thru the Department of Education for giving prime importance in molding these young minds to be more skillful and responsible by training them to observe quality and responsible journalism.
The government has high regard for campus journalism and the significant contributions it can do towards good governance. That is why, Republic Act 7079 or the Campus Journalism Act was enacted in 1991 to uphold and protect the freedom of the press even at the campus level. That is the basis why you – our young journalists – are here.
The Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental agrees with the intent of the law that the growth of campus journalism is a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth.
Our technological age is indeed very advance already. Sauna, kon naa kay sulat nga ipadala sa U.S. o Europe nga naa sa pikas bahin sa kalibutan, it will take weeks and months to reach its destination. But now, what we feel and say only takes one click of the send button and the other side of the world can already read it.
How important is that to journalists like you? It means that as the influence of media and journalism expands, so does the responsibility of journalists in using these tools. The more communication moves faster and wider, the more journalists should be accountable and responsible. In addressing societal issues confronting us today, journalism can be a very effective means to initiate change. Turn to the person next to you and say, “Be an agent of change!”
We are so happy and honored to have you visit and see the beautiful Province of Misamis Occidental. Welcome to this very important event. God bless to all the contestants. You are all winners in your own rights. Thank you!
