Hon. Aurora Virginia M. Almonte’s Welcome Message: 5th SP Recognition and Awards Night
My due respect to our Governor, Honorable Herminia M. Ramiro; to our First District Representative, my better half, Congressman Jorge Taghap Almonte, with our two sons, Julius Jorge and Niño Jorge, to my colleagues in the Sanggunian together with their respective family who are present here, Hon. Lovely Liezl Baz Yape, Hon. Dodge Cabahug, Sr., Hon. Teodorico Olegario II, Hon. Zaldy Daminar, Hon. Jim Delos Santos, Hon. David Navarro, Hon. Roy Yap, Hon. Emeterio Roa, Sr., and Hon. Simplicia Neri; to our dearest department heads in the Provincial Government; to the SP staff here present; to our friends from media; to each and everyone in attendance; ladies and gentlemen, good evening!
When I was elected as Vice-Governor in 2013, I had the opportunity to witness the 4th SP Recognition and Awards Night, which was also a Turn-Over Ceremony, where the Hon. Henry S. Oaminal, who is now the Congressman of the 2nd District of this Province, handed to me the gavel of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. That was on June 26, 2013 at the La Familia Function Hall, Mobod, Oroquieta City. It was then that I was made aware of the SP Recognition and Awards Night’s foundation. This activity, which has become a tradition of this Sanggunian, was conceived and realized not out of necessity, nor mandate, but of love. It made an impact within me then, not only intellectually, but emotionally as well, because I saw and felt, especially, among the SP Leadership and Staff the passion in what they were doing. Tonight, I am positive that the same passion is burning.
The torch of this tradition has to keep on burning because sadly, only a few of our constituents understand the true essence of the tasks and responsibilities of our local legislators or Members of the Sanggunian: The Sangguniang Bayan, Sangguniang Panlungsod, and Sangguniang Panlalawigan, for that matter. In general, in the eyes of the people, all elective officials are viewed and given credit only when they have participation in infrastructures and other tangible projects and activities. It is unfortunate that it is in this context that legislators are expected to perform in the same manner as the executive, like giving financial assistance to infrastructures, scholarships, and other activities needing financial assistance; and it is a common knowledge that legislators must perform such functions.
At this point, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to express my heartfelt appreciation of your presence this evening. I personally regard your attendance tonight with joy and gratitude so that, together, we could convey to the people of Misamis Occidental the significance of the labors of our Sanggunian Members in crafting legislations in order to bring about development in our Province. Those achievements which could not be readily seen, but are undoubtedly inseparable and are embedded in all aspects of development in our Province.
I warmly welcome you all tonight, so that together, let us honor the Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan who mindfully and faithfully performed their tasks and responsibilities as Board Members of this Province; whose legacy, enshrined in the Codes, Ordinances, and Resolutions could pave the way to a brighter future for the people of Misamis Occidental. Again, I WELCOME you all to the 5th SP Recognition and Awards Night. To our honorees and awardees, MABUHAY!
Thank you and good evening!
